Our Fish Farm

Since our founding in 1989, ALBE-Fischfarm has developed into a market leader in eel farming and processing. With an annual production volume of 320 tons of eels at our site in Haren-Rütenbrock and Europe-wide marketing of around 600 tons, we rely on state-of-the-art technology and responsible methods. Our team of ten trained professionals ensures, through careful work and innovative processes, that the highest standards in quality and species-appropriate husbandry are maintained.

Eel farming –
Different than everyone thinks!

The Rearing

Our rearing facilities provide ideal conditions for the development of eels. At a constant temperature of 24 – 26°C, nearly 1.5 million eels live in 60 specially designed basins. Water quality is ensured through regular biological cleaning processes and biofilter towers, with the water being enriched with oxygen to create optimal living conditions. Every six weeks, we automatically sort the eels by size to best promote their growth.

Eel adventure
Everything at a glance!

The European eel begins its life cycle in the distant Sargasso Sea, where it spawns and hatches as a larva. From there, it embarks on an astonishing journey that takes it across the Gulf Stream to the coasts of Europe. After years in European inland waters, the eel returns to the Sargasso Sea as an adult fish to spawn again and begin the cycle anew.

The Shipping

Depending on customer requirements, we ship the eels live or slaughtered, in various sizes and weights. Shipping is carried out safely with our specialized transport vehicles or through refrigerated shipping or as frozen goods, to bring the eels intact and gently to smokehouses and customers throughout Europe. We sort the eels by size and deliver them weighing between 150 and 1000 grams to meet the individual needs of our customers.

Sustainability

At ALBE-Fischfarm, sustainability is at the center of all our activities. We are aware of the importance of the European eel as a species in need of protection and are actively committed to its preservation. Our goal is to promote a sustainable eel industry that considers both ecological and economic aspects.

To secure the natural population of the eel, we work closely with national and international authorities, research institutions, and the Initiative for the Promotion of the European Eel e.V. A central measure is the promotion of stocking and support of research projects. Additionally, we promote the release of large, mature females into barrier-free coastal waters to support the reproduction of the eel.

Initiative for the Promotion of the European Eel

To secure the threatened population of the European eel, the Initiative for the Promotion of the European Eel e.V. was launched in March 2009. This initiative unites fishermen, processors, and traders with the common goal of sustainably promoting and preserving the natural eel population in Europe.

A central measure of the initiative is the stocking of suitable waters with young eels, as scientific studies have shown that this is the most effective method for securing eel populations. Additionally, the release of large, mature females into barrier-free coastal waters is promoted to support natural reproduction.

In our stocking fish facility, we produce 6 million young eels annually, which are made available for stocking European flowing waters. These efforts contribute significantly to stabilizing eel populations and maintaining biodiversity in European inland waters.

Through close collaboration with eel research and national as well as international authorities, it is ensured that the initiative’s measures are always based on the latest scientific findings and are effectively implemented. The Initiative for the Promotion of the European Eel e.V. is an important step to ensure the continued existence of this fascinating fish species while supporting a sustainable eel industry.
